A guided tour of the historical aspects of the Mamila compound and surrounding neighborhood starting at the Tower of David Museum. Starting Friday, November 16th! |

In the mid 19th century, commercial and residential properties began to be developed outside the ancient walls of the Old City of Jerusalem, adjacent to the Jaffa Gate and the Citadel creating one of the most luxurious streets in Jerusalem. Today, the new Mamila-Alrov Quarter has been opened recreating yet again, the most prestigious shopping neighborhood in the city. However, the area has not always seen such tranquility and was left as a ghost town from 1948 – 1967 divided by the border. |
| Mamila Stories starts inside the Tower of David Museum on the top of the Phasael Tower. From this viewpoint, the entire city of Jerusalem can be explored – both east and west, old and new. The exceptional views include the holy site of Jerusalem together with clear visuals of how Jerusalem developed outside the Old City walls, and in particular that of the Mamila compound. |
| The tour continues on to the Jaffa Gate where the theme of change and development will be further discovered, in particular examining the changes that took place in the second half of the 19th century in this area and the commercial activities that took place in the Old City. |
| Mamila Stories will then proceed along what used to be the border that divided the area and then reach the newly renovated compound. Before enjoying the shopping boulevard and coffee and cake provided as part of the tour, there will first be a visit to the Stern House (Herzl stayed here during his visit to Jerusalem) and Clark House (a grand house built in the style of the Arabian Nights). |
