Jerusalem in History

Chanukah, which falls on December 21st this year, commemorates the Hasmonean (Maccabean) Revolt in 165 BCE and the rededication of the Temple in Jerusalem.
Since Talmudic times, Jews have marked the holiday by lighting special eight-branched lamps (hanukiyyot) to commemorate the eight days of the festival. There is an ancient Jerusalem custom of placing the Chanukah lights outside the doorway of the household to publicly announce the miracle of one small jar of oil that lasted eight days. Today, one can still walk the traditional neighborhoods of Jerusalem during the long nights of the festival and see hundreds of lighted "hanukiyot" illuminating the cold winter night.
